Operating a Motorcycle in Kentucky

In order to operate a motorcycle in the state of Kentucky you must:

  • Meet the state’s minimum age requirement
  • Obtain a Kentucky motorcycle license (you may also need to obtain a motorcycle instruction permit)
  • Register your motorcycle with the state of Kentucky
  • Obtain insurance coverage that meets Kentucky state requirements

Getting a Kentucky Motorcycle License

According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), in addition to meeting the requirements necessary to obtain a regular driver’s license, individuals must apply for a motorcycle license to operate a motorcycle.

Motorcycle Education & Training in Kentucky

Motorcyclists should sign up for a motorcycle safety course. In Kentucky, it is mandatory for all first-time riders to complete a motorcycle safety course with instruction provided by the Motorcycle Safety Education Program (MSEP) to obtain a Kentucky Class M motorcycle license.
