Operating a Motorcycle in Minnesota

To operate a motorcycle legally in the state of Minnesota, all riders are required to:

  • Meet the state’s minimum age requirement
  • Obtain a Minnesota motorcycle license endorsement (you also need to obtain a learner’s permit)
  • Register your motorcycle with the state of Minnesota
  • Obtain insurance coverage that meets Minnesota state requirements

Getting a Minnesota Motorcycle License Endorsement

According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, in addition to meeting the requirements necessary to obtain a regular driver’s license, individuals must apply for a motorcycle license endorsement to operate a motorcycle.

Motorcycle Education & Training in Minnesota

Motorcyclists should sign up for a motorcycle safety course. In Minnesota, it is not mandatory to complete a motorcycle safety course to obtain a Minnesota motorcycle license endorsement, unless you are under the age of 18.
