Operating a Motorcycle in Rhode Island

In order to operate a motorcycle in the state of Rhode Island you must:

  • Meet the state’s minimum age requirement
  • Obtain a Rhode Island motorcycle license (you also need to obtain a motorcycle permit)
  • Register your motorcycle with the state of Rhode Island
  • Obtain insurance coverage that meets Rhode Island state requirements

According to the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles, in addition to meeting the requirements necessary to obtain a regular driver’s license, individuals must apply for a motorcycle license to operate a motorcycle.

Motorcyclists should sign up for a motorcycle safety course.  In Rhode Island, it is mandatory to complete a motorcycle safety course to obtain a Rhode Island motorcycle license, regardless of age.
