Operating a Motorcycle in Maryland

In order to operate a motorcycle in the state of Maryland you must:

  • Meet the state’s minimum age requirement
  • Obtain a Maryland motorcycle license (you also need to obtain a learner’s permit)
  • Register your motorcycle with the state of Maryland
  • Obtain insurance coverage that meets Maryland state requirements

Getting a Maryland Motorcycle License/Endorsement

According to the Maryland Department of Transportation, in addition to meeting the requirements necessary to obtain a regular driver’s license, individuals must apply for a Class M license to operate a motorcycle.

Motorcycle Education & Training in Maryland

Motorcyclists should sign up for a motorcycle safety course.  In Maryland, it is not mandatory to complete a motorcycle safety course to obtain a Maryland Class M license unless you are under the age of 18. Maryland Motorcycle Insurance Requirements
