Operating a Motorcycle in Colorado

Requirements for legally riding a motorcycle in Colorado include:

  • Possessing a valid Colorado driver license. Colorado does not issue “Motorcycle Only” licenses.
  • Obtaining the correct motorcycle endorsement on your Colorado driver license (“M” endorsement allows you to drive two and three wheel motorcycles and “3” endorsement allows you to only drive three wheel motorcycles).
  • Registering your motorcycle with the state.

Requirements for Getting a Motorcycle Endorsement in Colorado

You must already hold a valid Colorado driver license if you’re pursuing a motorcycle endorsement. You can take either of the two following paths:

Option 1 – Testing Path:

  • Pass the motorcycle written exam.
  • After passing, purchase a motorcycle instruction permit.
  • Schedule and pass a motorcycle drive skills test.
  • Visit a DMV office to add the endorsement to your license.

Option 2 –Waiver Path:

Age & Permit Holding Requirements

  • If you are under 18, you must hold the motorcycle instruction permit for 12 months before obtaining the endorsement.
  • If you are under 16, you must be under the direct supervision of a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (“MSF”) instructor at all times when riding a motorcycle on your permit.

Training & Safety Courses

  • The MOST program was created in 1991  as a result of a state law which requires that the Colorado State Patrol (“CSP) establish a motorcycle operator safety training program.
  • MOST only certifies Basic training, but CSP recommends that experienced licensed motorcyclists take an Advanced training course.
  • CSP advises that completing a MOST course is the best option for getting an endorsement. Riders who pass a MOST course can take their waiver card to a DMV to get an endorsement without any further testing required.

Helmet & Protective Gear Laws

  • Riders under 18 must wear a DOT-approved helmet.
  • For all riders, some form of eye protection, such as a visor on a helmet, goggles, or eyeglasses with lenses made from safety glass or plastic, is required under state law. A windshield is not considered adequate eye protection.
