How to get Permission to Ride a Motorcycle in Iowa
Interested in riding in Iowa? There are a few different ways you can get the approval to hit the road:
- Get a motorcycle permit.
- If you have a regular driver’s license, you can get a motorcycle endorsement added to your license.
- You can also get a motorcycle-only license (Class M license).
Testing Requirements
If you’re looking to operate a motorcycle in Iowa, there are different testing requirements you may need to satisfy depending on whether you’re applying for a permit, endorsement or license.
- Permit. To get your permit, you need to pass the motorcycle knowledge exam and a vision screening. If you do, you will be issued a four-year term permit, which cannot be renewed.
- Endorsement. If you’re seeking to add a motorcycle endorsement to your driver’s license, you have to pass the motorcycle knowledge test, skills test, and vision screening.
- License. For the Class M license, you must pass the motorcycle knowledge test, operator knowledge test, skills test, and vision screening.
For both the endorsement and the Class M license, you can waive the skills test if you complete an approved motorcycle education course.
Motorcycle Education & Training in Iowa
The DOT administers a Motorcycle Rider Education (MRE) program, which offers basic, intermediate, and advanced courses via the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF). The basic courses are taught by Iowa-licensed, MSF-certified rider coaches and focus on training beginners in mental preparedness, situational awareness, risk evaluation and more.
Motorcyclists are encouraged to sign up for a motorcycle safety course, especially new riders. In Iowa, it is not mandatory to complete a motorcycle safety course to obtain a motorcycle endorsement or Class M license unless you are under the age of 18.
- Riders under 18 must complete an Iowa-approved Motorcycle Rider Education (MRE) course
- Riders 18 and older may use course completion to waive the motorcycle skills test
