Operating a Motorcycle in Alabama

  • Meeting the state’s minimum age requirement.
  • Obtaining a Class M endorsement on your Alabama driver’s license (or a restricted “B” license for certain younger riders).
  • Maintaining insurance coverage that satisfies Alabama’s minimum liability requirements.

Refer to the Alabama Motorcycle Manual or contact the Alabama Department of Revenue for more information and/or to confirm any additional requirements.

Minimum Age & License Types

14-15 years Class M with restriction “B” Only motor-driven cycles (5 horsepower or smaller).
16+ years Full Class M endorsement Standard motorcycles or motor-driven cycles.

Getting an Alabama Motorcycle License Endorsement (Class M)

Steps to obtaining a Class M endorsement include but are not limited to:

  1. Study the Alabama Motorcycle Operator Manual from ALEA. Make sure you have access to the most up-to-date, current edition.
  2. Pass a written (knowledge) test based on that manual.
  3. Pass an on-cycle skill test. For those 16+, pass a road (skills) test, unless you qualify for a waiver (e.g. by completing an approved motorcycle safety program).

Contact the Alabama Department of Revenue to confirm any additional requirements, including required documentation and applicable fees.

Training

While not always mandatory (depending on age and license type), safety courses are strongly encouraged. See the Motorcycle Safety Program offered by Alabama here for more information.

Insurance Requirements for Motorcyclists

Alabama law requires that all motorcyclists carry liability insurance. Minimum limits are:

  • Bodily injury liability: $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident
  • Property damage liability: $25,000 per accident

Make sure your policy is issued by an insurer licensed in Alabama.

Helmet, Safety, and Other Laws

  • Both operators and passengers must wear an approved helmet in Alabama.
  • Alabama also encourages motorcyclists to wear appropriate protective clothing, including a plastic faceshield attached to a helmet, jacket, pants, gloves or boots to provide protection in a collision or during inclement weather.
