Operating a Motorcycle in Arkansas
The requirements to legally operate a motorcycle or motor-driven cycle on public roads in Arkansas include:
- Meet the minimum age requirement
- Possess the proper motorcycle license endorsement (or special license for younger riders)
- Pass the required tests
- Register your motorcycle and pay the applicable fee
- Maintain motorcycle insurance that meets Arkansas’ state minimums
Minimum Age and License Types

Testing and Fees
The testing and fee requirements for Class M motorcycle licenses and Class MD special licenses include:
- Required Tests
- Applicants must pass a written test, road test and a vision screening.
- The road test may be waived if an approved motorcycle safety training course is completed, such as the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) course.
- Fee & Expiration Date – Class M
- Pay the applicable fee.
- Class M licenses are generally valid for eight (8) years.
- Applicants aged 70 or older may apply for a license valid for either four (4) or eight (8) years.
- Fee & Expiration Date – Class MD
- Pay the applicable fee.
- Class MD licenses are issued for a period of not more than two (2) years.
Class MD licenses expire one (1) month after the licensee’s 16th birthday.
Motorcycle Education & Training
While Arkansas does not require every applicant to complete a motorcycle safety or training course, doing so has these benefits:
- Applicant may waive the road test if an approved course is completed.
- Improves safety, preparedness, and may make applicant eligible for insurance discounts.

Arkansas Motorcycle Insurance Requirements
Motorcycle owners in Arkansas must carry liability insurance that meets state minimums. While Arkansas has not issued online guidance outlining insurance requirements specific to motorcycles, applicants can expect to be required to obtain the same liability coverages required for motor vehicles under state law:
- Bodily injury liability; and
- Property damage liability

- Your motorcycle must be registered in Arkansas to be operated legally.
