Operating a Motorcycle in Rhode Island

The Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) manages motorcycle permits, endorsements, and licensing.

Definition of a Motorcycle:

Under Rhode Island law, a motorcycle includes any motor-driven vehicle with a saddle or seat for the rider designed to travel on not more than three wheels. This includes standard motorcycles and autocycles (three-wheeled motorcycles).

To legally operate a motorcycle in Rhode Island, you must:

  • Obtain a special license to operate a motorcycle, and
  • Complete a motorcycle safety course provided by the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI).

Getting a Rhode Island Motorcycle Endorsement

Once you have completed your mandatory CCRI safety course, a motorcycle “M” endorsement can be added to your Rhode Island driver’s license at any DMV branch.

Steps to Obtain a Motorcycle Endorsement:

  1. Complete a CCRI motorcycle safety course.
  2. Bring your CCRI course completion certificate, endorsement application, and driver’s license to the DMV.
  3. Pay the applicable endorsement fee.

After processing, the DMV will add the motorcycle (“M”) endorsement to your Rhode Island license.

Endorsement Types:

  • “M” endorsement with no restrictions – allowed to operate both 2-wheeled motorcycles and 3-wheeled motorcycles.
  • “M” endorsement with “Q” restriction – can only operate 2-wheeled motorcycles.
  • “M” endorsement with “W” restriction – can only operate 3-wheeled motorcycles.
  • Scooters, autocycles and mopeds do not require special licensure to operate.
