Operating a Motorcycle in Hawaii

In order to operate a motorcycle in the state of Hawaii you must:

  • Meet the state’s minimum age requirement
  • Obtain a Hawaii motorcycle license (you may also need to obtain a motorcycle instruction permit)
  • Register your motorcycle with the state of Hawaii
  • Obtain insurance coverage that meets Hawaii state requirements

Getting a Hawaii Motorcycle License

According to the County of Hawaii, in addition to meeting the requirements necessary to obtain a regular driver’s license, individuals must apply for a motorcycle license to operate a motorcycle.

Motorcycle Education & Training in Hawaii

Motorcyclists should sign up for a motorcycle safety course. In Hawaii, it is not mandatory to complete a motorcycle safety course to obtain a Hawaii motorcycle license, you are required to hold a Class 1 or 2 permit for 90 days and submit a Driver Education and Behind the Wheel Motorcycle Certificate before applying for the skills test.
