Operating a Motorcycle in Massachusetts

In order to operate a motorcycle in the state of Massachusetts you must:

  • Meet the state’s minimum age requirement
  • Obtain a Massachusetts motorcycle license (you also need to obtain a motorcycle learners’ permit)
  • with the state of Massachusetts
  • Obtain insurance coverage that meets Massachusetts state requirements

Getting a Massachusetts Motorcycle License

According to the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles Department of Transportation, in addition to meeting the requirements necessary to obtain a regular driver’s license, individuals must apply for a motorcycle license to operate a motorcycle.

Motorcycle Education & Training in Massachusetts

Motorcyclists should sign up for a motorcycle safety course.  In Massachusetts, it is not mandatory to complete a motorcycle safety course to obtain a Massachusetts motorcycle license, unless you are under the age of 18.  To find a Massachusetts Motorcycle Rider Education Program (MREP) training center, click here.  The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) website contains operator safety information.
