What is a Motorcycle?
In California, a motorcycle is defined as a vehicle that has a seat or saddle for the rider and is designed to travel on no more than three (3) wheels. California offers the below 2-wheel motorcycle classes:
Class M1 – authorizes the operation of any 2-wheel motorcycle, motor-driven cycle, or motorized scooter, as well as all vehicles listed under Class M2.
Class M2 – authorizes the operation of any motorized bicycle, moped or motorized scooter.
Class M1 or M2 Motorcycle License Requirements
- Complete a driver license or identification card application.
- Pass a vision exam.
- Provide fingerprints.
- Pay required fees.
- Have your photograph taken.
- Pass the applicable knowledge and skills tests.
Motorcycle Education & Training in California
- Riders under age 21 are required to complete a CMSP-approved training course prior to receiving a permit.
- Riders age 21 and older may complete an approved course to waive the DMV motorcycle skills test.
California Motorcycle Insurance Requirements
- $30,000 for injury/death to one person.
- $60,000 for injury/death to more than one person.
- $15,000 for damage to property.
