Operating a Motorcycle in Idaho
The requirements to operate a motorcycle in Idaho include:
- Obtaining a valid driver’s license.
- Obtaining a motorcycle license endorsement.
- Titling your motorcycle.
- Obtaining insurance coverage that meets Idaho minimum state requirements.
Getting an Idaho Motorcycle Permit
If you do not already hold a motorcycle endorsement, you may first obtain a motorcycle instruction permit.
To obtain a motorcycle instruction permit:
- You must already hold a valid Idaho driver’s license (Class A, B, C or D).
- You must pass the motorcycle written (knowledge) test.
- Restrictions to riding a motorcycle with a permit include: no freeway (controlled-access highway), riding, no passengers, and riding during daylight hours only.
- The fee for the instruction permit is $15.
Getting an Idaho Motorcycle Endorsement
To legally operate a motorcycle in Idaho you must add a motorcycle endorsement (“M”) to your valid driver’s license.
Steps typically include:
- Holding a valid Idaho driver’s license.
- Taking and passing the motorcycle knowledge test.
- Taking and passing a motorcycle skills test, which can be waived if you take a certified motorcycle safety training course and receive the endorsement within 25 months of taking the course.
- Submitting required documentation and paying the $15 endorsement fee.
Motorcycle Education & Safety Training
Applicants under 21 years of age are required to complete an approved motorcycle rider training course.
The material covered by these training programs include motorcycle control, traffic laws, defensive riding techniques, and help improve rider safety.
Title & Insurance
All motorcycles in Idaho must be properly titled and insured to meet state requirements.
Insurance must satisfy Idaho’s minimum liability coverage for motorcycles. Additionally, riders must carry proof of insurance, registration, and their endorsed driver’s license or instruction permit while riding.
