Operating a Motorcycle in Maine

The Maine BMV manages motorcycle permits, licenses, and license endorsements.

To legally operate a motorcycle in Maine, you must:

Getting a Maine Motorcycle License Endorsement

If you do not currently hold a motorcycle endorsement, you must first obtain a motorcycle permit. Permits allow you to practice riding under certain restrictions before earning your endorsement.

Requirements for obtaining a permit include:

  • Be at least 16 years old.
  • Complete a motorcycle rider education course.
  • Pass the motorcycle knowledge test and vision screening.
  • Pay all applicable testing and permit fees.

Permit restrictions include:

  • You may not carry passengers.
  • You must wear a helmet.
  • You must have valid insurance.

The permit is valid for 2 years. If you fail to complete the driving test within two (2) years from the date your permit is issued, you will have to retake the motorcycle rider education course for a subsequent permit to be issued.

Getting a Maine Motorcycle License Endorsement

To operate a motorcycle in Maine, you must have a motorcycle endorsement (Class M) on your driver license.

The requirements for obtaining an endorsement include:

  • Hold a valid Maine driver license.
  • Complete an approved motorcycle safety course (required for riders of all ages).
  • Submit your course completion card and pass any required tests.
  • If you’re seeking a waiver of the road test, provide a certificate demonstrating completion of the Basic Rider Course, which is a 15-hour course and is the only course acceptable for waiver of the road test.
  • Pay applicable endorsement fees at a BMV office.

Motorcycle Education & Safety Training

In Maine, applicants under the age of 18 must complete basic driver education. Applicants of all ages must complete a motorcycle driver education program consisting of an 8-hour block of instructions.

Consult the Maine Department of the Secretary of State for a list of motorcycle rider education schools and rules governing motorcycle rider education.

Registration & Insurance

All motorcycles operated in Maine must be properly registered and insured. Registration can be completed through your local BMV branch or municipal office.

Maine motorcycle insurance must meet the state’s minimum liability coverage requirements. Proof of insurance is required for registration and must be carried at all times when operating a motorcycle.
