Operating a Motorcycle in Missouri

Requirements to legally operate a motorcycle in Missouri include:

  • Holding a Class M license or permit, or a driver license with the M endorsement.
  • Titling and registering your motorcycle with the state of Missouri.
  • Maintaining insurance coverage that meets Missouri’s requirements.

What is a Motorcycle Endorsement?

Endorsements qualify you to do things you could not without the endorsement being added to your license. The Class M Motorcycle endorsement is available for non-commercial driver licenses in Missouri.

What is Required to Obtain a Motorcycle Endorsement

To obtain a motorcycle endorsement on an existing driver license, applicants must:

  • Pass the Class F and Class M written tests;
  • Pass a vision test;
  • Pass a road sign recognition test; and
  • Pass a motorcycle skills test.

For applicants ages 16 to 18, Missouri’s Graduated Driver License (GDL) requirements also apply.

Motorcycle Education & Safety Training

  • The Missouri Motorcycle Safety Program (MMSP) provides courses that enhance motorcycle rider safety and promote motorcycle rider education.
  • MMSP teaches courses at 21 training sites in Missouri.
  • Completion of a MMSP class is not required. Alternatively, you can obtain your license by taking the written and riding tests at an approved testing site.
  • If you successfully complete MMSP’s Beginner RiderCourse or the H-D New RiderCourse, you will receive a course completion card, which you should present at a license office within a calendar year to obtain your M endorsement.

Insurance Requirements

  • Missouri requires minimum liability coverage, as follows:
    • $25,000 per person for bodily injury
    • $50,000 per accident for bodily injury
    • $25,000 per accident for property
  • Missouri also requires uninsured motorist coverage of $25,000 for bodily injury per person and $50,000 for bodily injury per accident.
