Age Requirements

Endorsement Classes

The MVD classifies motorcycle endorsements based on engine displacement:

  • Class Z: Any 2- or 3-wheeled motorcycle with an engine less than 50 cc.
  • Class Y: Any 2- or 3-wheeled motorcycle with an engine of at least 50 cc but less than 100 cc.
  • Class W: Any two- or three-wheeled motorcycle with an engine of 100 cc or more.
These endorsements can be added to an existing driver’s license or issued as part of a motorcycle-only license class (Class M).

Getting a New Mexico Motorcycle License / Endorsement

To obtain the endorsement or motorcycle-only license, you must meet the standard driver’s license requirements, plus the motorcycle-specific conditions. Key steps include:

  • If you’re under age 18: you may waive the road test requirement if you complete a state-approved motorcycle safety training course, such as the MSF “Basic RiderCourse.”
  • If you’re a first-time license holder: passenger restrictions may apply. For example, an initial licensee (i.e. first-time license holder whose license is issued while under the age of 18) cannot carry a passenger on a motorcycle.

Required documentation includes proof of identity, proof of New Mexico residency, and vision screening.

While not mandatory for all riders, training offers major benefits:

  • The New Mexico Motorcycle Safety Program provides approved rider-courses that meet national standards through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.
  • Regardless of requirement, training is strongly encouraged for safety, risk reduction, and improved riding skills.
