Operating a Motorcycle in North Dakota
The requirements to operate a motorcycle in the state of North Dakota include:
- Being at least 14 years old.
- Obtaining a North Dakota motorcycle license (you may also need to obtain a motorcycle permit).
- Registering your motorcycle with the state of North Dakota.
- Obtaining insurance coverage that meets North Dakota state requirements.
Getting a North Dakota Motorcycle Permit
- Restricted to daylight driving only.
- Restricted to 510 CC motorcycles and under.
- Must wear a helmet.
- Cannot carry passengers.
- Please consult NDDOT for additional restrictions that may apply to applicants between the ages of 14-15.

Getting a North Dakota Motorcycle License
To legally operate a motorcycle in North Dakota, you must obtain a motorcycle license via the NDDOT.
Steps to obtaining a Class M license include:
- Visit a ND Driver License Site in person to apply.
- Provide proof of identification.
- Provide proof of social security number.
- Provide proof of North Dakota residence address.
- Pass a vision screening.
Motorcycle Education & Safety Training
Education and training are strongly encouraged in North Dakota. The North Dakota Motorcycle Safety Program (NDMSP) offers safety training and education, along with free safety materials.
Students must be at least 14 years old to take an NDMSP course and must provide a signed waiver upon arrival to the course. NNDOT has specified that students between the ages of 14-15 cannot take a motorcycle permit test without having participated or registered in an NDMSP course.
Insurance
Before you ride a motorcycle in North Dakota, you must have a valid insurance policy in effect. If law enforcement requests your insurance information, you must provide them with the name of your insurance policy carrier and your policy number.
Individuals who operate an uninsured motorcycle are subject to a $150 fine for a first violation and $300 for a second or subsequent violation in three (3) years. Uninsured motorcyclists may also be subject to license suspension.
