Getting a Delaware Motorcycle License Endorsement
If you’re looking to apply for a motorcycle endorsement in Delaware, you must already have a Delaware driver license before applying.
Key Requirements & Procedural Highlights
- Applicants aged 18 or older must pass both a written examination and road skills test to receive the endorsement. However, if they complete an approved motorcycle rider-education program, the test requirements are waived.
- Applicants under age 18 must complete the Motorcycle Rider Education Program and must submit an application signed by their parent or guardian.
- After successfully passing the written exam, you will be issued a motorcycle permit for the period of six (6) months. The permit can be extended once for a $5 extension fee.
- Motorcycle endorsement fee is $12.
Motorcycle Education & Safety Training
Motorcyclists are strongly encouraged to complete a motorcycle training course. In Delaware, the Basic RiderCourse (BRC) is administered by the DMV and is funded by fees collected from motorists for licensing, renewals, and registration. Some benefits of the BRC course include:
- Completion of the course waives the DMV road test.
- Some insurance carriers may provide a 10% motorcycle insurance discount for graduates of the course.
- The training courses include both online classroom instruction and on-cycle riding instruction.
Registration & Insurance
Before riding on Delaware’s public roads:
- You must properly register your motorcycle on an annual basis.
- You must obtain liability insurance that meets Delaware’s minimum requirements for motorcycles, as follows:
- $25,000/$50,000 bodily injury
- $10,000 property damage
- $15,000/$30,000 personal injury protection
