Operating a Motorcycle in New Mexico

In order to operate a motorcycle in the state of New Mexico you must:

  • Meet the state’s minimum age requirement
  • Obtain an New Mexico motorcycle license endorsement (you may also need to obtain a motorcycle instruction permit)
  • Register your motorcycle with the state of New Mexico
  • Obtain insurance coverage that meets New Mexico state requirements

Getting a New Mexico Motorcycle License / Endorsement

According to MVD New Mexico, in addition to meeting the requirements necessary to obtain a regular driver’s license, individuals must apply for a motorcycle license endorsement to operate a motorcycle.

Motorcycle Education & Training in New Mexico

Motorcyclists should sign up for a motorcycle safety course. In New Mexico, it is not mandatory to complete a motorcycle safety course to obtain a New Mexico Class M Motorcycle Only license or a Class W, Y or Z motorcycle license endorsement, unless the applicant is under the age of 18.
