Operating a Motorcycle in Oklahoma
In order to legally operate a motorcycle in Oklahoma, you must have a motorcycle “M” endorsement on your current Oklahoma driver’s license. Oklahoma defines “motorcycle” as having:
- Seat or saddle for use of each rider;
- No more than three (3) wheels in contact with the ground (excluding a tractor);
Combustion engine motor with a piston or rotor displacement of 150cc or more; and
- Electric motor with a power source capable of producing 1,000 watts or greater.
Permit Requirements
In Oklahoma, you are eligible for a motorcycle permit if you satisfy the below conditions:
- You are at least 14 years old.
- You passed the Class D written test. If you’re under 18 years old, you need to have a parent or guardian present when you take the test.
- You passed the MSF Basics course (ages 14-18).
Once you pass the required tests, a motorcycle permit will be issued to you. Once you have held the permit for at least thirty days, you will be eligible for a full M endorsement.
Permit Restrictions
Riders under the age of 16 are subject to the following permit restrictions:
- May only drive during the hours of 4:30 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.
- Must wear approved protective headgear.
- Must be accompanied and instructed by a licensed individual who is at least 21 years old.
- Piston displacement cannot exceed 300 cc.
Endorsement Requirements
You can add a motorcycle endorsement to your current driver’s license without receiving a permit first if you are at least 16 years old and meet the below requirements:
- You passed the Class D written test.
- You are between 16-18 years old and passed the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Basics course.
- You are 18 years or older and have either passed the MSF Basics course or passed the Class M written and skills tests.
If you’re 18 or older and have never been licensed, you will have to take both the Class D and Class M written tests before an M endorsement is issued to you.
Motorcycle Safety & Training in Oklahoma
Service Oklahoma, which provides motorcycle services on behalf of the state, only accepts MSF as a qualifying motorcycle safety course. The three (3) approved courses are:
- MSF Basic RiderCourse;
- MSF Basic RiderCourse2 – License Waive; and
- MSF 3 Wheel Basic RiderCourse.
The MSF courses cannot be completed online because they require in-person training and instruction in operating a motorcycle properly.
Safety Measures:
Riders over the age of 18 are not required to wear head protection approved by the Department of Transportation (DOT). However, eye protection (windshield or DOT-approved safety eyewear) is required for all motorcycle drivers.
Oklahoma Motorcycle Insurance Requirements
In order to operate a motorcycle in Oklahoma, including for the purpose of taking the motorcycle skills test, you must carry minimum liability insurance.
Required minimum coverage includes:
- $25,000 bodily injury protection per person
- $50,000 bodily injury protection per accident
- $25,000 property damage protection
The Oklahoma Insurance Department (OID) has shared that the general recommendation from the insurance industry is for you to carry a minimum of $100,000 of bodily injury protection per person, $300,000 per accident and $100,000 of property damage.
