Operating a Motorcycle in Texas

In order to operate a motorcycle in the state of Texas you must:

  • Meet the state’s minimum age requirement
  • Obtain a Texas motorcycle license
  • Register your motorcycle with the state of Texas
  • Obtain insurance coverage that meets Texas state requirements

Getting a Texas Motorcycle License

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, in addition to meeting the requirements necessary to obtain a regular driver’s license, individuals must apply for a Class M license to operate a motorcycle.

Motorcycle Education & Training in Texas

Motorcyclists should sign up for a motorcycle safety course.  In Texas, it is mandatory to complete a motorcycle safety course to obtain a Texas Class M license.  The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation has established the Basic Rider Course (BRC) content through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF).
