Standard Road / Street Motorcycles

Standard road/street motorcycles have an upright riding position with the handlebars at a comfortable distance from the seat, mid to forward controls, standard performance, are for street use only, 250cc and up, and are foreign and domestic made. These motorcycles are designed for short and long distance trips. Since these bikes are usually bare bones, they are not usually heavily accessorized. There are a variety of these types of motorcycles by various manufacturers such as Harley-Davidson, Honda, Yamaha, BMW, Kawasaki, Husqvarna, Suzuki, Moto Guzzi, Ducati, Triumph, KTM, and Indian.

Sport / High Performance

Sport / High Performance Motorcycles have an aggressive riding position with a low handlebar position, rear controls, high performance, lightweight (under 500 lbs), plastic body work, 551cc and up, street use only, and are foreign and domestic made. Sport/high performance motorcycles are designed with a track background. The aggressive riding position usually makes these types of bikes more uncomfortable for a longer ride. A sport bike usually has ABS (antilock brakes), lightweight engine components, different traction control modes and high performance tires. There are a variety of these types of motorcycles by various manufacturers such as Honda, Yamaha, BMW, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Moto Guzzi, Aprilia, Ducati, Triumph and KTM.

Touring

Touring motorcycles have an upright to laid back riding position with handlebars at a comfortable distance from the seat, mid to forward controls, heavy weight (500 lbs or more), saddlebags or storage, for street use only, usually 500cc and up, and are foreign and domestic made. Touring motorcycles are designed for long rides and usually are heavily accessorized with a fairing/windscreen, heated grips and seats, dynamically tuned air suspension, radios, GPS units, floorboards and other convenience accessories like a 12 volt outlet and intercom. There are a variety of these types of motorcycles by various manufacturers such as Harley-Davidson, Honda, Yamaha, BMW, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Moto Guzzi, Ducati, Can-Am, Triumph and Indian.

Cross Country

There are a limited number of manufacturers of trikes such as Harley-Davidson, Honda, Piaggio and Can-Am.

Trike Conversion Kits

Trike conversion kits adapt two wheeled motorcycles to have three wheels. They have an upright riding position, mid to forward controls, three wheels, heavyweight (usually over 700 lbs), can contain bodywork, saddlebags, trunks, tour packs, street use only, 500cc and up, and are foreign and domestic made. Trike conversions are designed for long distance riding and comfort. They can be heavily accessorized. The trike kit itself can be an accessory. There are a limited number of manufacturers of trike conversions such as Lehman Brothers Trikes, Moto Trikes, and California Side Car Trikes. These types of conversion kits can be applied to multiple manufactures motorcycles such as Boss Hoss, BMW, Honda, Harley Davidson, Suzuki, Yamaha and Indian.

Mopeds

Mopeds have an upright riding position with handlebars a comfortable distance from the seat, with or without bicycle pedals, 2 & 4 stroke, low performance, street use only, small displacement, 49cc and below, and are usually foreign made. Mopeds are designed for commuting through town at slower speeds. Generally a moped has great gas mileage and cannot go faster than 35 mph. There are a variety of these types of mopeds by various manufacturers such as Benelli, AMF, Honda, Piaggio, Tomos and Puch.

Scooters

Scooters have an upright riding position with handlebars a comfortable distance from the seat, step-through frame, bodywork, storage (under seat and trunk), are generally lower performance, street use only, 50cc to 900cc and are usually foreign made. Scooters are designed to get across town with great gas mileage. Most scooters do not have shifters and some can even have three wheels. Scooters are found in many urban areas because they are easy to park in tight areas. Though scooters are designed for street use, the smaller engine powered ones usually cannot ride at highway speeds. There are a variety of these types of scooters by various manufacturers such as Benelli, Honda, Yamaha, BMW, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Piaggio, Vespa and Lambretta.

UTV

Utlity task vehicles/side by sides have upright seating with steering wheel, side by side seating, heavyweight, knobby tires, sport utility use, off-road use only, four wheels, 500cc and up, and are foreign and domestic made. UTVs are designed for utilitarian (work related) and off-road use. Although UTVs have lights, signals and seat restraints they are not legal for road use. UTVs are commonly used for hunting, farming, beach and off-road terrains. They incorporate 2×4 and 4×4 designs to conquer difficult landscapes. They can be accessorized with storage bins and racks as well as off-road protection like skid plates. There are a variety of these types of type of vehicles by various manufacturers such as Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Can-Am, Polaris, John Deere and Arctic Cat.

ATVs have an upright riding position with handlebars a comfortable distance from the seat, mid controls, light to heavyweight, off-road style knobby tires, sport and utility use, off-road use only, four wheels, 150cc to 1000cc, and are foreign and domestic made. All-terrain vehicles are designed for utilitarian (work related) and off-road use. ATVs are commonly used for hunting, farming, beach and off-road terrains. Custom

Custom motorcycles are custom made by a licensed shop, may or may not be in production line, one-off made pieces, custom paint, custom chrome, street use only, 250cc and up, and are foreign and domestic made. Custom motorcycles are designed for all purposes (long rides, aesthetics, performance and off-road). There are a large number of manufacturers, but some are very small scale in production while others are large scale.

Salvaged

A salvage title motorcycle means that the bike is declared a total loss after an accident. Insurance companies declare motorcycles a total loss when repairs cost a high percentage of the bike’s value. A salvaged, reconstructed or otherwise “clouded” title has a permanent negative effect on the value of a vehicle. The industry rule of thumb is to deduct 20% to 40% of the Blue Book® Value. For the mechanically-gifted person, who is willing to invest a bit of sweat, and is unconcerned with resale value, a salvaged motorcycle can be a great bargain

Reconstructed bikes are designed for all purposes (long rides, aesthetics, performance and off-road).
